Background

Background

In 2006, I co-founded a South African focussed video sharing website called MyVideo. YouTube was still independent and discovering local South African content was hard to surface. Our idea was to create a hyper local community around South African content.

I learnt a ton about launching a startup, experimenting with marketing tactics, diving deep into video compression and streaming technologies, user generated content and advertising business models.

My focus on sales and marketing eventually secured advertising campaigns for the likes of Nokia, Samsung, LG and other local brands. With took our learning working with video compression and streaming technologies and seperated these out into different brands to capitilaise on the increased inbound interest.

Having so many service offerings, each with limited success, spread us thinly and resulted in the classic startup mistake of a lack of focus. Alongside this, our ambitions for scale where limited by operating within a small market like South Africa which led to the sunsetting of the company.
